How To: Preppy Guys

February 23, 2009 by Tom

Below are some tips on how guys can pull off the preppy look.

Steps

  1. Wear respectable brand name clothes such as Polo Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers, Lacoste, Tommy Hilfiger, J. Crew, and Vineyard Vines. A common misconception is that clothes from Hollister, Abercrombie and A.E. are preppy, but a traditional prep would disagree. These brands are for wannabe preps and normal teens.
  2. Shop for Clothes that come in classic colors, although this is by no means a definitive list: pink, sky blue, lime green, Nantucket red, or yellow. Looking at some clothing from the brands above will probably give you a good idea. Buy clothes that have colors that match well and look good on you. For example, a redhead will look better with green than pink or lavender.
  3. Develop a comfortable but clean look. Find classic looking belts, preferably tan/light brown. Make sure the belt is leather if it is a dress belt, and canvas with leather tips if it is for casual occasions. Make sure it is not covered in little taggy bits or studs etc.
  4. Wear leather moccasins, suede loafers or Clark’s in the winter, and boat shoes (top-siders) or leather flip flops in the summer. Wearing a pair of top-siders without socks is classic preppy.
  5. Pick a scent and stick to it. Don’t use different scents of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, aftershave, deodorant and cologne. Buy a matching set. Don’t put too much on.
  6. Consider that if you wear glasses, try wearing cool-looking glasses or consider contacts. Dark rimmed glasses are geeky or scene/emo/punk, etc. Try getting rim-less glasses and clean them everyday to give it less of an “obviously wearing glasses” look.
  7. Keep simple hair. A common preppy hairstyle is the shaggy look or the fluffy look, or hair just parted on the side and short.Keep your lips moisturized. Chapped, cracked lips are unsightly. No unnatural hair color or shaved hair. Keep your hair looking natural!
  8. Be fresh and neat. Have clean, trimmed fingernails. File and buff your nails to make them healthy-don’t bite them. Shave and comb your hair as often as you need to. Don’t wear wrinkled or stained clothes. Brush and floss your teeth. Whiten your teeth if necessary. Be well groomed. Avoid tats and getting pierced.
  9. Look healthy. Get toned and take in some sun color just don’t over do it. Don’t burn your skin! Use sunscreen. Don’t use tanning beds either. Drink lots of water, take vitamins and eat lean protein. Take excellent care of your skin, teeth, hair and nails.
  10. Participate in some kind of sport, crew, horseback riding, lacrosse, track, polo, rugby, football, golf, sailing, skiing and tennis are classic examples of preppy sports. If it is in the Olympics, it is preppy. Even if you don’t do a sport, you should stay fit as possible. For high school sports, try sports such as tennis, golf, swimming, soccer, track etc. Lift weights for toning but don’t develop huge weight builder muscles.
  11. Act friendly and outgoing… a little shy is OK, but be nice. Smile. Stand up straight. Avoid getting people angry. Forget talking about money or politics-it can put people off.
  12. Study hard and remember to keep your grades up, preferably 3.0 GPA at minimum and above, because preps are also known as being smart and hard working on top of their looks and lifestyle. They get into good preppy colleges because they try and work hard. Use good grammar. Many preps end up getting into Ivy League or Private Universities because of their grades, sports and high SAT scores. Keep up with what is going on in the world and financial markets. If you don’t understand investing money basics-read books and learn.
  13. Read Etiquette books. Don’t laugh! Good manners is not just for girls or older men. It shows people you have had a good upbringing. Use basic politeness such as please, thank you and excuse me. Be considerate and hold doors for people. Don’t wear a hat indoors. Keep your cell phone in check and put it on vibrate when you go to a public place.

Tips

  • Preps are known for their clothes, good grades, playing sports and having a lot of friends. Throw a party for no reason every so often. Try to keep the party drug and sex free. If you see someone getting drunk, don’t let them drive or hurt themselves or others. Don’t get drunk yourself-you will look like an idiot!
  • Do something to make yourself known even if it’s just getting in with one preppy guy. That one guy could really carry you far. It really pays to know the right people. Playing sports is a good and natural way to be one of the guys.
  • Walk into any ‘preppy’ labeled store [Polo Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Brooks Brothers, etc.] and check out the clothing. Note patterns in the style, cut, and colors. That’s what you want to be wearing.
  • If you don’t have the money for good quality clothes and shoes, try getting a job in the summer as a lifeguard or golf caddy. Apply to Country clubs and Tennis/Golf resorts as well. There are many benefits to having those jobs and you can learn by observing.
  • Take advantage to what your school has to offer. There are plenty of opportunities to meet people. For example, you can work on the school newspaper or join your local Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) club, a business or marketing club is always a great preppy association choice. If you want to get into a good school after High School, it helps to be involved with outside interests. Be a “Big Brother” or look around your community-what can you do to help it?
  • If you are a Senior be very focused on college applications, scholarships, sports and classes.
  • Be prepared to lose sleep. Between sports and studying, there is not enough time to do it. Get at least 6 hours a night.
  • Do your best because the only one you are doing it for is YOU!
  • No matter what, never have your underwear showing. EVER!!!!
  • If you have a tattoo you can cover it up with make-up or remove it with a laser.
  • You can “cover up” a piercing with a special type of wax.

Warnings

  • There are people who don’t like preps. Beware of haters. They’ll try and prank on you or embarrass you.
  • Just keep cool with people and you’re all right. Sometimes preps do become friends with other social groups.
  • Don’t be a snob or rude. Remember that while you act preppy, and dress preppy, not everyone wants to or can afford to. Be preppy and proud, but tolerant, welcoming, and nonjudgmental towards other types of people. Acting snobby just gives preps a bad name and is a sign of poor upbringing. Do not boast or brag about your things. Do not talk about family money. Also learn how to properly introduce yourself and greet people.
  • Don’t be loud and obnoxious.Be courteous towards everyone. Remember that being a prep is gearing to be a gentleman from a upper class. You can wear the “right” clothes but the behavior has to change as well too.
  • Don’t let stress and pressure get to you. You don’t have to be #1 in sports and grades. Don’t start drinking because your life is too hard. Stay focused.
  • Don’t hook up with trashy girls. They can mess up your life big time. Always play it safe.
  • Don’t stress your parents for cash all the time. Your family might not be on solid financial ground like some kids. When you can, try to work odd jobs to bring in cash. If someone teases you about being poor develop a thick skin and just laugh with them. Make it very difficult for people to offend you. Some people don’t get easily upset–try to be more easy going.
  • Don’t chew gum, belch or fart in public. It is tacky. Don’t be late for events or school. Don’t be crude or use sexual language/humor in front of girls. Don’t scratch or groom yourself in public. Don’t talk loudly on your cell phone.
